The European Parliament has 626 Members, representing the 370 million people who live in the 15 Member States of the European Union. MEPs meet in Brussels and Strasbourg to scrutinise, amend and vote draft legislation, and approve the annual budget of the European Union. They also debate issues affecting the European Union and draw attention to the problems of their constituents. Elections take place every 5 years, and the last election was held in 2009.
